It's a Weekend of Sequels With New Trailers For 'The Mummy' and 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2'

Two very different trailers dropped over the weekend, that of “The Mummy” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” and both were excellent, in their very different ways, of giving us a sense of what we can expect from them.

The next cinematic universe to take over the big screens rises on June 9th, 2017 when The Mummy hits theaters. Starring Tom Cruise, the film is set to kick off the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe, which will see the stories of familiar freaks like Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and the Wolfman interconnect for the first time.

Every major studio has been trying to build a universe, and it looks like Universal is about make a good attempt. Certainly the trailer for “The Mummy” spares no expense, and it seems to be a good indication of things to come. There's an amazingly tense, exciting action sequence, followed by glimpses of others that only seem more ridiculous and overloaded, along with Tom Cruise constantly saving his much younger, blonde love interest. Then there's the mummy herself, who looks to be about as interesting and blandly sexual as the Enchantress in “Suicide Squad.” Sucks, because making such a famous monster a scary female villain would've been a great way to make yet another reboot stand out from the crowd. But then, maybe Universal is just going with what works. “Suicide Squad” maybe have been critically derided, but it was also one of the most profitable movies in a summer filled with box office bombs. The question is whether the movie can similarly exceed expectations with no real iconic characters to speak of.

It's showtime. Watch the brand new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 teaser trailer. Obviously. We also may not know how “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” would go, but one thing is for sure: it would either be a massive hit or a massive disappointment. The first one was so insanely good, with such great characters, banter, and action, that the sequel could only exceed expectations. After all, the first was all about establishing the team and getting to know everyone's history and personalities. So in the next installment, audiences will expect to see these guys not only cut loose, but bring even more to the table. That's a lot of pressure for Marvel to improve on one of their most loved properties, but if the trailer is any indication, they're once again more than up to the task. First, we got that adorable Baby Groot running around and getting into all kinds of shenanigans, and the movie will explore whether he's the same old Groot regressed, or someone new entirely. Gamora and Quill's relationship looks like it's still evolving, and it looks like his paternal issues are gonna be explored, now that those maternal ones seem resolved. And Drax. Drax gets the last word, and it's hilarious. Looks like “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” will be the best thing about next summer. Here's hoping the soundtrack will be too.

“The Mummy” hits theaters June 9, 2017, and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” open May 5, 2017.
